Data backing Fourth of July Fireworks boycott still lacking

SACRAMENTO – Senator Dean Florez, D-Shafter, today expressed his surprise over the failure of Cal-Fire to provide the Senate with the data on safe-and-sane fireworks that Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger reviewed before urging Californians not to buy them this Fourth of July, severely limiting many charities’ fundraising for the year.

In a letter last week to Chief Ruben Grijalva, director of the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (Cal-Fire), Florez asked for data on the number of fires started by safe-and-sane fireworks in each of the last five years. He also asked if the Governor had reviewed such data before making a decision with statewide financial consequences.

Florez noted that the information requested should be readily available, and questioned how the Governor arrived at his decision if that were not the case, adding, “Certainly the public and the numerous charities which depend on the sale of fireworks to help fund their efforts deserve answers about the dangers posed by the sale of safe-and-sane fireworks.”
