Forest Service to start controlled burns
| By: Bill Curtis 12:57 PM Saturday, March 22nd, 2008 |
Kernville, Ca….Forest Service fire crews plan to begin ignitions on three prescribed burning operations located in Kernville, Riverkern and along the Upper Kern River north of Kernville.
The “Burma” segment of the Kernville Defensible Space Project is part of a 33 acre project both west and south of Burma Road. Firefighters have been working for approximately 1 ˝ years on cutting thick, potentially hazardous fuels (brush) and “limbing up” trees using chainsaws. Upon completion, this fuel reduction project will produce a 400 foot wide buffer between private homes and dense brush fields on national forest lands. Mechanical chipping was used on some of the piles to minimize smoke emissions. However, because of inaccessibility, not all piles could be chipped. These remaining piles will be burned.
The Riverkern Project will also involve pile burning. These piles are the result of maintenance on the existing fuel break between national forest and private lands east of (behind) the community. The resulting reduced fuel zones in Riverkern and Kernville will help reduce the intensity of wildfires and aid firefighters should wildfires occur.
Fire crews will also conduct a prescribed burn operation along Mountain 99 north of Kernville. The targeted areas are dispersed recreational camping areas on the east side of the river and may encompass portions of both sides of the road. The objective is to reduce and lower the fire hazard risk and, thereby, lowering the chance for escaped fires during the summer months.
Fire Managers will work closely with two Air Pollution Control Districts to manage smoke production and reduce any local impacts.
Smoke may be visible for one or two days during burning periods. Travelers along Mountain 99 can anticipate some smoke in the area. However, no road closures or traffic delays are expected.
The prescribed burn efforts will continue through April as conditions permit.
For further information, please contact Jim Yearwood, Fuels Management Officer, at the Kernville Ranger Station, (760) 376-3781, extension 622.
