California Highway Patrol (CHP) officers statewide will focus their attention on people who do not buckle up when riding in a vehicle. May 21, 2008, has been designated as a “Vehicle Occupant Safety Awareness and Education Day,” to coincide with the Statewide "Click It or Ticket" Mobilization May 12 through June 2, 2008.

7:55 am, homicide suspect ANDREW QUINTON HERNANDEZ escaped from custody.HERNANDEZ was being transported to Kern Medical Center for a blood draw. HERNANDEZ' charges made him a high risk inmate and he was transported to KMC by two deputies (Detention Deputy GERMAN and Deputy CASTANEDA). HERNANDEZ was transported in a transportation van while wearing waist and leg shackles.

Gang Suppression Section (GSS) were in the area of Ming Ave and So. 'P' St, when they were contacted by a passing citizen of a fight occurring at Ming Ave and So P St.

On 5/14/08 at 7:18 p.m., the Kern County Sheriff's Office received a report of a shooting in the area of Flower Street and Haley Street. At 7:35 p.m., Kern Medical Center reported a victim of a shooting had arrived in their Emergency Room and at 8:06 p.m., Memorial Hospital also reported receiving a victim of a shooting.

Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger today issued the following statement as temperatures are expected to hit triple digits in numerous parts of the state: “In numerous areas across the state we will see temperatures rise to triple digits today and through the weekend, and I want to remind Californians to take precautions during this first heat wave of the year. The anticipated record-breaking temperatures are an early reminder of what is to come this summer, and I urge everyone to help reduce their risk of heat-related health problems and to take the necessary steps to prevent power outages that can come with increased use of electric power.”

Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger released the following statement today regarding the state Supreme Court’s ruling on same-sex marriage: “I respect the Court’s decision and as Governor, I will uphold its ruling. Also, as I have said in the past, I will not support an amendment to the constitution that would overturn this state Supreme Court ruling.”

In a 4-3 decision, the California Supreme Court ruled today that homosexual marriage bans are unconstitutional. California voters overwhelmingly approved Proposition 22 in 2000, defining marriage as between one man and one woman. California's highest court decided the law was unconstitutional.

Wednesday, May 14, Bakersfield Fire Dept personnell responded to a house fire a re-enforced 1 on Lewis St. near Cottonwood Road in southeast Bakersfield. First arriving companies found smoke emitting from the front door of an approximate 1200 sq. ft house. A female was trying to assist a disable male from the home. Firefighters safely evacuated both occupants from the home.
